Should there be a technical development board?

As long as I get to ask for ELI5’s I’m down.
I’d like to get the community’s opinion on that too. Should non-techies be allowed to post?
My preference, and no offense to you mnstrcck, is “no”, as the entire point of the board is to stick to tech-talk among tech-talkers and to only about technical things. Difficulty adjustments, protocol handlers, ACP details, and other github pull related discussions would be the only discussions allowed. If it’s not specifically on the topic of development, it doesn’t belong and will be moderated.
What do others think?
-
My biggest concern here is where we draw the line.
Who gets to be “techie” or not. should this be a closed group or hidden group? In the first scenario, who tells which ones is qualified or not.
In the last scenario how would new members with those skills be able to join in/know about it.I see your point, just not sure how this could be done in a good way, and without letting some users feel left out.
As i see the easiest way to handle such things as of now would be to have an own section for technical stuff.
Where admins were in “terminator mode” striking down in an extreme manner regarding FUD,Off topic and fistfights.Forcing everyone to have constructive and fact like approach to everything discussed, removing personal opinions thats not based on facts.
And when two devs/techies dont agree, the thread will and shall not wander of into a personal ****measuring contest. -

Good idea, I think it should be heavily moderated to keep fluff out. I think it would be good if anyone does not understand what is being discussed for them to post in another forum (Tech Support?) asking for an explanation, referencing the original post. How does that sound?
-
I agree that it should be kept clean, but spynappels has a great idea. A child board where you get to ask for clarification is, in my humble opinion, a great solution. It promotes not only open dialogue, but also teaching/learning. Everyone wins.
I think as long as it’s open, democratic and no one feels left out it’s got my vote of approval.
I fully agree. it will be a problem to draw the line and identify the individuals, that can/should/would participate in the board.
Also, as one of the feathercoin strengths is, that is is fully open, a private and hidden board would do no good to the coin.
The idea of a child board besides master developement board sounds good to me, as this gives the techies the possibility to discuss new developments and define the way to go without being bothered by spams, suggestions and what ever, while other people can ask and post on the child board.
This way the child board could be used to get opinions of other programmers ot techies on new developments if needed, while those other programmers could ‘qualify’ ;) for the development board, if they want to participate.

This would help to balance out the PR efforts with more technical innovation so I am all for it. If someone doesn’t understand it why not just ask someone like me or mnstrcck to translate it in to laymen’s terms? May as well take full advantage of the community we have here.
Perhaps each post could have a ELI5 at the bottom like a TL;DR section. To be honest there will probably also be a bunch of techs who might not understand but will be too embarrassed to ask. So let’s not kid ourselves.
-
Works for me.
We could enable the “post moderation” feature where ALL posts are pre-modded. Basically any posts go into a queue then a mod must allow them before they are made public. May be overkill but thought i’d throw it out there.
-
I think NutNut’s suggestion is a good one, mods can hive the questions into separate appropriate threads.

So good it’s used as an example for others. Mad respect bro!Technically speaking, I think creating a separate forum for words only a chosen few deem worthy of print is a fantastic idea; and it goes right along with Bushstar’s community ideals(!)

Ok guys bumping this thread. Do we have consensus here?
-
Sounds like a great idea to me. Its not easy finding feathercoin specific programming info.

Sounds like a plan! 8)

It’s been four days, and so far the votes are 23 to 0 (well, 20 and 3 “Quit bashing the community Kevlar, lulz”, thanks to Tuck and his 2 alts) in favor of.
I’m going to let it go another 3 days before locking voting, but from all indications this looks like it’s going to happen. ChrisJ and I both have high hopes that this will help to balance some of the marketing efforts by driving more discussion around development.
So, if you have some objections, now would be the time to voice them. Thanks everyone for voting and your continued support!!! See you in the technical discussions soon? :)
The only objection I have is that we end up with people not prepared to roll their sleeves up…
I saw it all the last time this was tried…I will do this/that/the other and nothing happened…I have no time for people who talk a lot and do little and tbh I feel it should be more for people who…
- Have the ability. 2) The time. And most importantly 3) The willingness to help.
I don’t want an endless array of threads with how do I get the currency information from the API or how do I install that widget on my site or what’s an an endless array?..This has to be for serious minds and meaningful action!
That could be mandated in the rules of the Board. Ie this is not a place for technical support.
Hi Mark
That is why the new Tech forum will be heavily moderated, with questions on the tech proposals hived off into the subforum for questions and anything else dumped into the main forum into the appropriate place. I’ll commit to making this happen and will take my lead on what should not be there from contributers like Kevlar, Bushstar, Zerodrama, Ghostlander etc.
Yeah it’s going to need a crack team including mnstrcck as well. I think this could work if it’s administered right. Personally I really like Wikipedia’s Community rules:
1. Be Civil
2. Assume the best in othersEverything else gets removed.

I made this comment here to do with our prioritisation and organisation and felt it was relevant to this topic.

I’d like to get more feedback on my comment above on the rules
This is the Wikipedia Video:

1. Be Civil
2. Assume the best in othersI think this is important so that we get to the real issues.
