Moving forwards after UNOCS
-
Learning is not an option in life. You either learn before you have to or you learn the hard way. And we learned the hard way.
Many of you feel we have not been open enough about the mistakes that have been made. It breaks my heart because I truly share in that regret knowing that the only thing I can do, for now, is focus on the future.
So on behalf of the whole team here at Feathercoin I would like to apologise over what happened with UNOCS.
The truth is this post should have come sooner and the reason it didn’t was because a lot of us disagreed with what was being proposed with UNOCS. We got carried away and rushed in to a partnership that was being run by an external group of developers, a process in which we did not have enough control. As a result we have let everyone down.
We won’t let this define us
The biggest mistake we could make now is to let what happened with UNOCS define us. Sometimes, albeit with the best of intentions, projects fail and it is often the only way to learn. The people who spearheaded the project are no longer directly involved with Feathercoin. This isn’t the time or place to partition blame or make judgements about what their intentions were. The job at hand is to learn from this and support the fantastic community that really defines what Feathercoin actually is.Trust but verify
I always look for the best in people, unless I am given reason to doubt them. One of the mistakes we made was being too quick to trust. Despite the lessons learned, we should not allow ourselves to become discouraged from inviting leadership from members of this community. This is an open source community and those involved worked hard and tirelessly for Feathercoin. We have achieved much under the stewardship of Justabitoftime, and we can all be proud of where we stand as a digital currency today.Drawing a line underneath this period in our history
The task now is to learn from what has happened. We will facilitate a system that ensures everyone’s involvement without any one member being able to make unilateral decisions. This will ensure accountability and representation from every hard-working member of this forum and the Feathercoin movement. You all deserve this. We owe it to you.I can not offer you perfection but I can promise progress with your confidence and support. We’re moving on, and we’d like you all to move on with us.
I encourage you all to provide me with some feedback and constructive criticism. This is a community, I am but a part of that community. I need to hear your voices in order to make us more than the sum of our parts!

If UNOCS is dead and gone, so be it. Still have to decide what to do with that pile of PXC and WDC.

So Feathercoin is no longer associated with UNOCS?Just want to make sure I’m reading this right…
That is correct, I do not consider Feathercoin to be a part of UNOCS any more.
I am still willing to work with other coins and have had some good experiences working with WDC and plan to help them where I can in the future. PXC as I have said before are very tight lipped and have a different approach to the community which is incompatible with ours.
-
Always look for silver linings… the UNOCS project was good on paper but we never really got to take off… it is time to make Feathercoin even more special and focus on what we do best Community. Nothing has changed at the core of what FTC is about, solidarity, grassroots and a sum total greater than our individual parts!
Onwards and upwards.

I am from Greece ,and i dont speak up usally , i dont know anything about programming ,what i have learn 39 years now is whenever i speak clearly, openmind and with good intentions for a working project and i’m commited to the job , then the job always pays out. Always look in the future for real life and every lesson you get is the profit for making things to happen. So don’t be angry for a problem that has occur ,but make a benefit from the problem. So lets get moving, not tommorow, but from yesterday!!! ;D
Thanks so much for your enthousiasmos (that’s Greek for the “god within” for those of you who don’t know). You have summed up the spirit of this community.

It is a shame about UNOCS, but it is what it is…
What dosn’t break us only makes us stronger I am still mining feathercoins, I still have faith in the community to push forward to a bright future for feathercoin, strength in numbers and we have many. -
Thanks so much, I had to tweet that out. Also the quote in your footer is one of my favourites of all time.
Failure is the norm especially in this space. But it’s how we choose to respond to that that really counts. I have now taken over from Justabit and my promise to all of you is that we will not make any announcements about anything until it is actually done and ready to deliver.
There is enough uncertainty in this space as it is.

It’s great to see people like you invest time in Feathercoin for free. Keep it up. Personally I’m too busy to spend a lot of time on FTC but will try to help any way I can.
P.S. Disappointing justabitoftime is no longer around here.
-
I never understood in the first place why we partnered with PXC and WDC.
-
Well said ChrisJ, let’s move forward and build on what we have achieved without mourning what did not work.
Thanks for being as transparent as you could, I feel a new purpose coming from the Dev team.
-
I always assumed PXC and WDC partnered with us!.
I still think reaching out to other members of the Crypto Currency community is a good idea. Don’t beat yourselves up too much…
-
Excellent decision. Now lets put this chapter behind us.
I had said earlier that this will end up killing WDC which bothered me a bit because they looked like a good community. Anyways, can not worry about others.
Now that UNOCS is dead, can we make a similar project on our own?
-
Thanks for all the support guys. I’m sure if we all pull together we’ll emerge much stronger! ;)

A step in the right direction.
In the interest of honesty: my confidence in FTC as a currency and as a software project has been incredibly shaky for the last month or two. After how bright things were looking initially, that’s something that’s disappointed me immensely, and a big reason why I basically withdrew myself from the community. I’m glad to see more transparency and openness has come about, and am incredibly thankful to chrisj for helping to facilitate this. Time will tell if things start moving in the right direction again. I am hopeful that they will.
I’ve taken lots of flak in the past for my criticisms, and I’ve given plenty of it when I’ve felt people were not being straightforward about situations or the direction of FTC, especially with regard to UNOCS. I will not apologize for that, because I have always done my best to try and push FTC and this community toward what I believe is best. We all have disagreements; there’s nothing wrong with that. After all, it’s been said that “Agitation is the atmosphere of the brains.” Although I know some people don’t trust me and likely think I’m an asshole (the latter is probably deserved, though I don’t apologize for that either :P), I hope we can move forward and turn FTC into what so many of us have hoped: a viable, strong, secure, decentralized currency unbeholden to any man.

Great, I feel much better now :)
Lets move on, we are unstoppable now! -
So whats the plan on moving forward?
Personally I am focused on the next difficulty patch to encourage more loyal miners. We are hitting 41.4% difficulty swing in one go which is too much for a lot of miners to stick around and work through. The next patch will make our adjust more fine grained still and try to prevent the effects from time warp and abuse through hash rate. I have linked in the discussion on this patch from where groll posts his latest simulations.

Tomorrow I have one of our new development members Maria coming over to my house to spend the day looking at the market site. I believe that it requires a lot of work and there are some key design solutions to be made. I will get Maria up to speed on the site code so that we can work together on it.
Maria has focus on merchant development and is working on a Feathercoin shop at the computer shop where she currently works. She will be releasing the tools she develops to the public for others to use.
I also intend to spend some more time on the website as a while as the site is not very welcoming to people who are not already fully versed in crypto currencies.
These are just the things that I am working on currently.
Phenixcoin were stealing everything Feathercoin format wise and heading on with their own ideas, even at one point having Feathercoin based domains point to their own things. Justabitoftime thought it would be a better option to engage with them and not be at odds when it wasn’t necessary.
I have no idea whathappened. I’m still waiting for my break. but far too much going on to do anythng anymore. but the email made me come back for a gander.
interesting times.
