Known Scams and Scammers
-
I agree but make it a subfolder of Introductions (where everybody has to post first anyway) or in Support (where it logically belongs).
We also need to get Chris to tweet each confirmed scam separately with a “Warning:” tag.
-
Just thought that maybe we should also post something in the newsletter detailing the latest scam in case people don’t go through the forum. its very easy to miss something.
I was thinking that, but I believe it would reach more people if it was a general category. Many make one post in the newbies section and never go there again. Or many will never visit the support forum because they never have a need.
The catagory and its childboard would be buried away. I know its just one level, but the people who will be scammed are the ones least accustomed to forums.
I don’t have twitter like many, but this is a great idea. When coupled in with a small piece on scams in the newsletter, we can make a very public statement that we wont stand for scams.

I agree on this. Only modification I would make is maybe rename “Unconfirmed Scams and Scammers” to something a bit more neutral like “Approach with caution”? I don’t want us to go angry mob on people who actually might offer legit goods/services, but maybe in a bit clumsy way…? This would be a place where you should describe why something doesn’t look very convincing, and give the accused party a chance to think about their approach and business model which would make others more confident… :)
I like that. “Approach with Caution”
I’ll edit the original post to reflect this.

Good Idea, Calem :)

I’ve been pushing this for a week or so now. Till now I’ve made comments in threads, but after this latest incident (it’s particularly conniving) I though that these things need to be brought front stage and centre.
It’s a warning to anyone who thinks they can try take advantage of the community. They will be called out and dealt with in the most open source and public manner possible. This will require some tact though. We don’t need vigilante’s trying to bully people out. So this is the only way I think it could work.
If it’s software, we have a number of people here who rip em open and check code. We have even more people here who know how to scour the net to find alias’s of known dodgy peoples.
I’ll never fall for any of their tricks. I’m somewhat seasoned to spot these possible issue’s. I have run my own online business before and dealt with scammers and false credit card claims. The average new comer though, might be using a forum for the very first time. They are the one’s I’m trying to help.

Another good reason this is a good cause, we want all members to be protected on this forum, but yes especially the first time users who might be new to crypto currencies.

It is a dichotomy. But I think the community has been picking up on scammers, more quickly than I expected. By monitoring the newbie section, and having moderators on the other threads.
One answer, is to recruit a few more, good but fair moderators like Calem. So we can keep a 24hr eye on whats going on, but be less strain on the current staff.
It has been a very important discussion on how we keep the site open, and there have been some cleaver alternate methods presented to cure modes of failure, but promote openess …

I have had an idea for using the “Your ideas in Feathercoin” to put sites like FeathercoinAddress.org and vote them up if we think they are good.
What about a negative vote, if bad or scam. We could then add the top 10 Good or Bad sites to a Banner, or automatically generate a scam v top page in Feathercoin website v3. from the votes given by members.
At the moment a particular moderator has to approach that potentially hostile member. Even when not, I have found members can easily misunderstand a moderation against them, even when it is a mistake or even just a question.

+1 rep Calem, this is a great idea. I haven’t been scammed so far and I’d like to keep it that way if I can.
Can we add the Federal Reserve to the list of known scammers? 8)

My main pre requisite is to keep the moderator work as light and simple as possible…
-
I am in favour of anything that helps people make informed decisions and I like Wrapper’s idea of focussing on the positives and recommending known bonafide services. That way people are aware of any risks.
I think you right. Should there still be a pinned topic where we can post a list of confirmed scams though? Kinda for record keeping? I think this allows people to see what forms these scams can come in and will help educate people on what to look out for.
What form should this approval list come in? Another pinned topic? Or that banner idea I saw mentioned?
More thoughts people! Gimmi!

We need a community of leaders… Not followers.
I suppose that is the primary goal here.
I think this could possibly be achaived with this “Welcome Pack” I’m brainstorming…
Once the voting period is over, I’ll start this next idea I’ve been playing around with.

Just bumping this so it remains fresh in my mind.

[me=Calem]coughs[/me]
bump.
Sorry. I’ve been very busy for the last week and will be for another. Just making sure I don’t forget about this.
I have a long list of things I would like to do for the community. This is one of the main ones.
Oh… Just because voting has ended, it doesn’t mean comments and suggestions should.
Keep it alive people.
