Feathercoin as a brand
-
Feathercoin is well defined in terms of the technology it uses. Recently, I was thinking about how is Feathercoin defined in terms of branding theory.
Now “brand” has an awfuly corporate ring to it, but branding theory holds for everyone and everything. People, religions, places, nations, sciences, world views, abstract principles, every single thing of value is known under a brand. Brand is close to name, but goes deeper. For example, if two people share the same name, it is still clear that their CVs and their reputations, or brand attitudes, are not the same.
Brand defines value. There are actions that build value, such as quality work, and actions that use it up â€" that “sell” under the brand. To maintain value, a brand must be defended. If everyone can sell under a brand, its value converges to zero. (We can see this happening. As everybody is selling under “crypto” and “blockchain” brands, their value converges to zero.)
In this thread, I would like to ask everyone to forget about engineering and think in terms of brands â€" keywords under which the public knows and trusts us. The things we use, programming languages, editors, algorithms are tools. They are brands, but not our brands. They are not defensible by us, anyone can use them or claim to be using them.
For example, Neoscrypt brand is worthless to us, because it is open source and can be used by anyone. It is a waste of effort to go the extra mile to build its brand value, because unlimited number of blockchains can, and will be launched under it so long as there remains any brand value in it. Neoscrypt can be mentioned, but only as a technical detail.
Now let me apologize for talking about these obvious things to you. But we will need to set proper mood and attitude for the C.I.C. workers. We must make sure they keep branding theory in mind when working for Feathercoin, and that they share the same branding attitudes.
We must define ourselves by sorting out the brand(s) we can defend, the brands that support us, but are not defensible by us, the brands that we tolerate (ie. support passively but not actively), and the things and brands that we oppose.
Brands defensible by us:
- Feathercoin
- anything else?
Brands that support us, but are not defensible by us:
- Neoscrypt
- crypto (cryptographic currency)
- blockchain
- decentralization
- what else?
Brands that we tolerate (support passively):
- Bitcoin
- what else?
Things and brands that we oppose:
- getting something for nothing
- “economic stimulation” by fiat creation
- what else?
I think that the whole contribution of decentralized currencies is in preventing some people from getting something for nothing from other people. It is my opinion that the brand attitude of Feathercoin should be about staying faithful to this principle, and possibly beating Bitcoin in the level of rigor in which we stay faithful to this principle, and repairing the economic system under this principle. If we are to present ourselves in this light, we need to oppose blockchains and coins and things whose primary purpose is to go against the said principle. Since we cannot and do not want to act as a judge saying which coins are good and which are scams, we need to oppose equally all other coins, perhaps with the exception of Bitcoin, due to its primacy. Please say your opinions and help update the list of brand relationships of Feathercoin.

I have updated the list of the things we oppose with “fiat”, because it is a way of getting something for nothing by the fiat creators.
-
We need to be careful in stating we oppose Fiat as to a lot of people that would turn them away as I think that would make us look like some fringe dwellers, better we ‘offer an alternative to Fiat’ to has equal access to all no matter where you live and it is not bounded by politics

Or perhaps the phrase “improve upon fiat”
Although even the word fiat may confuse some people. Its not a word I’ve ever heard used outside of the crypto scene. -
Deleting, but I’ll leave “economic stimulation” there, is that OK?

I think we should consider building a google stats page on the website.
Random thought i know.

What other words can you add to “integrity” and you have your market audience.
Branding, seems very “corporate” I’d personally avoid it. Though I understand the need for an “Image” defining it, may be a little harder.
How do you define inherent value to unpeg it from Fiat? (not possible…yet?) That’s a fair bit down the road still.
What is feathercoin, is it money, is it a commodity, is it making you pull your hair out, would you have its babies if you could, is it being spent/hoarded/thrown out car windows on the way past homeless peeps?? (though how the last one works, I can’t quite see many people lobbing Iphones at homeless people…)
Do you want to attract the infrastructure, let them create the brand around the currency. Do you want to appeal to miners, investors, or end currency spenders?
Sorry, but, do you know which specifics you want to target first, everything is generalisation and harder to market?
Obvious questions to me, I could guess at some of the answers, but where’s the fun in that, you people ARE Feathercoin! Decent OP, define Feathercoin and there is where the focus for a little while needs to be?
Short term goals, followed by long term, then you have a marketing plan?
@Panoramix damn you posting so many ideas recently, you made me post :-X

I’m proud of that, you are one of the smarter dudes over here >:D.
I’d like to think I have a plan, but that would be self-deception. Just contacting some celebs I know. I might be a narcissist like eg. Sam Vaknin. Maybe I’ll get bored with this. But what I wrote to Sam Vaknin are my true feelings. I don’t really believe we’ll repair the f*g economic system. It’s just that lock, stock and barrel is there, so why not take a shot :D .
