Those of you that have RMA'd... talk me through it.

I don’t want to screw this up.
As you know, my rig has apparently been limping with damage for awhile now, with damage to my motherboard and according to someone who ran a PSU tester on my power supply, a rail was out:
A friend had a power supply checker on him and we plugged it into it and everything was green except for -5v and he said it’s supposed to be green across the board.
The cables being charred at the ends because of that doesn’t help things. Sending those in while I’m at it.
So, I’m to understand that I’ve got a 3 year warranty on my Gigabyte motherboard and 5 years on my Seasonic power supply. Thing is, while there’s apparent damage to the motherboard, my fear is that you can plug a power supply into it, power it up, see the bios and they’ll shrug it off like it’s working even though I know it’s not working properly.
These guys aren’t going to play the “it’s not our product’s fault, it’s the fault of your X” game, are they? Is there anything I need to document specifically?
Let me know what your experiences have been with returns to these companies, if you could.

You first need to check the RMA policy, as some people like XFX want you to register your hardware with them in order for them to process the RMA.
I’m not sure what its like with gigabyte or seasonic…so check with them first. They will either let you RMA it to them, or ask you to go back to where you bought them.
Once you find out the process just go ahead with it.
You will usually have to give them your details, and the S/N number of the motherboard etc… at this point you will also be able to leave a comment and you can state where there has been an issue (the apparent damage) …most people will replace it or give you the next best thing they have, it will usually be same specs or higher…best case scenario you get a full refund and can go re-buy a newer mobo…I’ve only experienced the best case scenario with Amazon tho.
some RMA portals will allow you to upload pictures as well, so you would be able to show them the damage as well.

Seasonic returned a new powersupply to me already; super quick. Still waiting on Gigabyte to process. I did indeed submit information to their repair sites before shipping the devices off.
I was worried that they’d play the “blame game” on each other since both suffered damage at the same time, but apparently not.

Woop! Glad to hear it’s being sorted. in my experience, by the time you get to the RMA stage, if you can already prove you bought the item (receipt/proof of purchase) and they can see the items is still under warranty then there’s usually no issues.
are they giving you a Like for Like replacement? or newer parts?

The Seasonic was new. The board seemed repaired since it wasn’t “new” with new heat sink components like the newer revisions have.
So I’ve not been running it, ran it for a night at my benefactors’ and he said it was way too hot so he killed it. I brought it back to the place I do work on the weekends and rigged it up to run and…
It starts freezing. That’s kind of weird. Reboot. Reconnect. Freeze.
Huh. I pull the components off and I smell it. I pulled the CPU cable off and bam, fried. I’m trying to get the main power cable off now… it’s melted in there again.
I even had [i]less[/i] 7950s hooked up this time. Unbelievable.
I’m not going to put this one back together. I’m going to get the replacement parts and just sell off the components.

So your mainboard is fried? on the 24pin socket or at the bottom of the board?
If thats the case you have drawn to much power from the pci-e slots :)

24 pin socket AND CPU socket. I got the CPU socket free but the 24 pin one is really lodged in there this time. May have to take a box cutter to it.
If I’m drawing too much power, then these risers, even the ones that were good in the last batch I got, didn’t do their job right. Out of 13 I had to RMA 7. Of those that remained I thought they were fine but I guess not.
Is there any US supplier of risers that you guys have been happy with?

Is it powered risers or unpowered?
You should not experience this with powered!.
I usually just buy unpowered and make them powered myself following nutnuts guide.
I dont like the prefab ones cause they dont cut the leadback wire.

Powered risers, I’ve always bought powered. Just the same, I’ve given on up on the bigger rig, going to retire it’s remaining parts. I have the 750tis that are running mostly without issue, so I’ll stick with that.
