I guess I would technically be a casual miner since I use my rig for gaming as well. That said, I leave it up overnight to mine and usually whenever I’m at work or doing other things not involving the computer.

Hands down the best way I’ve seen to reduce heat is using this aftermarket GPU cooler http://www.arctic.ac/en/p/detail/index/sArticle/502/sCategory/2182. It’s a little pricey, but it’s practically silent. And at load, my GPU temp barely goes above 50C (you can see the temp in my previous post). I will caution you though, it’s a pain to install and took me a little over 2 hours.

My rig is quite simple. I wanted to try mining, but i didn’t want to spend much on it. So I bought mainly used parts. It cost me about 400 USD and gives 650 khash/s. Here is what I’ve got:
MB: MSI 945GT Speedster
RAM: 2GB
CPU: Some kind of Intel Duo @ GHz
PSU: Fortron FSP700-50ARN 700W
GPU1: VTX Radeon 6950 – 400 khs
GPU2: VTX Radeon 6850 – 250 khsRig is headless :) and has no HDD. It is running OS from USB stic. At first it was using BAMT, but I switched to SMOS Linux recently (it’s just better). Also because of the MB I had to use PCI-E riser x4 to x16 cable. And of course the rig is running 24/7 :)

I have 2 GPUs: Radeon 6950 and 6850. Hash rates are 400 and 250 khash/s. All my settings are stored in cgminer.conf file. So here it is: (the first value is for 6950 and the second is for 6850)

I found that adding a custom fan profile and ensuring the proper airflow throughout your case can help a lot in lowering heat. -

I have two computers mining: Home computer is mining randomly and another second hand computer is dedicated only for mining. I use GUI-Miner Scrypt with basic settings that it offers for my cards and MSI afterburner to control GPU core temp between 70-80c and Teamviewer to connect to computers by laptop and if needed also by Android phone. Below are specs for computers:
Mining dedicated computer (located another place in a cool basement):
Intel C2D E6400
Asus P5B Deluxe
2GB RAM
ASUS HD6970
XFX HD5770Home computer (mining when not used for other things):
Phenom II X4 965
Asus M4A785TD-V EVO
4 GB RAM
Sapphire HD5970 (lucky to buy this second hand card for 40€ to replace my old 8500GT :) )And here is picture of my home computer with HD5970. Another picture can’t have, cause second computer is not here, but nothing special to see on that other. It’s a normal black ATX case with side open to make it run a little cooler.

Not exactly a way of reducing a computer heat, but I say room temp play really big part in here. Find and use really cool location out of your hot apartment. I use place where I only cost electric and my friend’s basement gain the free heat. No extra fans or cooling needed, so this way also reduce total electric consumption for mining. It’s easy to connect anywhere with Teamviewer.
And the biggest bonus in this! When rig is away from your home, wife wont complain of your mining hobby and “home turning to be a factory”… so kind of I can say this is a way of reducing heat [2 tickets] ;)

Good way to reduce heat is having an open case and good air flow and fans good amount of in take for blowing air in as well as having out take fans to get rid of heat.
Also other ways is to have a well vented room or have in a cold place. Or you could go one step above and use water cooing to reduce heat and noise and this is something am tempted to do on my next system build for a custom modded case with water cooing custom made. -
Number 1.
Here’s my ‘rig’. Not exactly a great setup but it’s the best I can get.
I have, in my pc:
Sapphire 7770 Radeon
Intel i5-3550
2x1TB WD Black Hard Drives
8GB Ram
Asrock Extreme4 Z77 Mobo
4xDVD writers (used for ripping cds :P )
500w Silverstone Strider PSU (hoping to upgrade soon)
Cooler Master Elite 355u or somethingThe computer is also used so mining does not run continuously. However I managed to get the 7770 cheap at £85 with a free gaming mouse so it was quite a good deal. I get about 150kh/s. The stock clocks are 1000mhz on the core and 1125mhz on the memory but I’ve changed those to 965mhz and 1360mhz to get a good ratio for mining.
I could probably push the card further but I don’t want to stress my PSU to badly as its only a cheap model and I’m not sure it could handle a larger overclock, really. I’d also love to get a better graphics card but again the PSU is the bottleneck. When I’ve upgraded that to an 800w model I’m hoping to get a 6950 or 6970 as they are rather cheap (around £100 if you can get a good deal on eBay) and are still good and capable for mining. I’ve already got about 120 FTC (I know its not much but I’m happy with it) from mining and are getting around 5-6 more coins per day.

Number 2 & 3 (makes sense to put in one post)

There’s my guiminer-scrypt settings. I find the interface more helpful to use than cgminer which gets annoying when I want to stop mining for just a short time.
I’ve had to restart the miner (and pc) a few times since I started mining so the accepted shares aren’t as high as they should be but I think its enough proof to show I’ve been mining for 200hrs =)
