Actually, I think the official client could be improved a lot UI-wise. That would also give it an extra benefit over other coins. Remember that the user is supposed to be central with the Feathercoin project.
I couldn’t agree more, that why I was requesting some type of feedback to the client. It needs to be consumer friendly… where would you start?
Don’t get me started ::)

get rid of the dull grey box

intuitively know where to find balance, status, payment orders and payment receipts (visually, and make it bigger size font like this forum)

basic operation in respect of backups (auto reminders etc)

hide the expert stuff

make it easier to copy your wallet address

address book management can use some work

flexible input on orders (also input in dollars etc)

in 2 years time, even windows will completely be ‘touch’: anticipate in the design
Not very structured yet, but I can make some rough drawings tonight on my - shame - iPad. Trouble is my dev knowledge does not exceed simple VB.net :-[

Usability is a huge part. Make that better and as mentioned above, that is a huge plus over other currencies.
I suggested already that when starting the app and it’s already open, it should recognize that as me wanting to have my already running app open.
Improve the way to pay. We pay people or companies, not addresses. So you create an address book entry to pay people and should with some auto complete magic (look at gmail for example) get those popping up when you want to pay someone. Note that gmail “hides” the email address by default, which could be done here as well.
A click scheme, where you can click on a webpage a link and it will open your client and prefill the payment window with address, a potential amount and even a label.
When you send money to an address, it gets automatically added to your address book (maybe make it an option that can be turned off) for future reference.
Make a simple mode, where the blockchain info is hidden by showing a “percentage done to syncing” for example and remove the mining from the client itself, that is utterly useless on there.
There is a lot more. I could get a true UX designer into it and she would rip this thing more than one new orifice for certain :)
I’ve been trying to figure out how to make the wallet compatible with money management apps like GnuCash, KMyMoney, and *choke, cough, stutter, seizure* QuickBooks *choke, cough, stutter, seizure*.
I swear ever since I’ve had the client and blockchain I’ve been reminded to the point of depression of the difference between the PROBLEM oriented design pushed by Microsoft Visual Studio computer science teachers and the USER oriented design that benefits people.

Usability is a huge part.
Excellent points, Christian.
I really suck at graphics, but hey, I had some fun ::)

Image 6I was thinking of some other things, like adjustable color schemes, flexible UI themes (I remember having that with Winamp type of Mp3 players that could totally morph in something else depending on the theme chosen; Awesome!).
From a more technical point of view, I would love a feature whereby a wallet on my PC can easily be shared with a mobile wallet. One could think a bit further down this road and imagine a PC wallet holding everything with a mobile wallet fully synchronised to that same wallet but with extra protection (PIN code, daily limits (user defined), etc etc). That would make it very easy for users; let the Devs take care of a sufficient safety in this respect.
As a matter of fact, I have a BTC wallet on my phone which is also imported in my PC wallet and at the blockchain.info website. One wallet, access everywhere. For larger amounts, the PC wallet contains another address that is not shared over different media.
But it is easier to think of nice features than actually find someone who can implement the great stuff.
-
+1 for the circular wallet - very cool idea!
I love Blockchain on iOS, anything similar to that ‘look and feel’ wise does it for me.
-
That’s actually brilliant.

A feature that lets people know when a new version is out is sensible. Basically they [the client] would connect to a JSON feed or something similar. They would just check the local version against the JSON feed and display a message already in the binary.
I agree with this 100%. We do this for game mods with a launcher; check version, update if necessary, load mod.
For new users to crypto-coins …

big buttons w/explanatory icons + tooltips onmouseover.

plenty of reassurances of what’s safe and what isn’t safe to do.

time estimates (even if wrong) on transactions (n00bs get worried easily and cry “scam” on forums before anything has had time to happen)

a clear explanation of fees and how they may be affected on any given transaction and why

a link to feathercoin.com instead of text on the About drop down

possibly some kind of headsup that when they load the (any) client, they may notice some unusual activity (port scanning) and that it’s normal, but they should make sure they are properly secured (firewall atl) for teh internets?

tooltips in mining section

tooltips, tooltips, more tooltips

perhaps a progress indicator on overview tab for unconfirmed transactions?

instead of saying “Out of Sync”, how about “Synching” or “Synching with Network”. This should makes n00bs feel more comfortable than what appears to be some sort of error message in red. Possibly change the text to Green so they know it’s doing what it should, not “Oh Shit Red Text out of Sync! Start forum thread now!”
For teens …

SKINS ;)
For geeks …

properly align the text Copyright © 2011-2012 Feathercoin Developers (and the rest) on About menu item

and for cool factor 5 - a line graph on overview tab (bottom left?) which displays your balance history (ftw!)

HELP > DEBUG > INFORMATION - change “Bitcoin”?

have Transactions tab show the balance (like a ledger)

give ability to change label from transaction tab

make labels (on transaction tab) independent to each transaction (if possible), not assigned to the address. this allows people who use the same address for payments from multiple sources (mistake) to more easily identify who the transaction is from.

show wallets balance somewhere in the client so it can be seen from any tab; currently only shown on Overview and Send tabs (like MultiBit)

show exchange info (like MultiBit)

speed up initial sync (like MultiBit - if possible)

show $USD equiv when sending (like MB)

perhaps a memo field or additional field of some sort in the address book to allow other information (contact info, email, purpose, etc)
Others …

That reminds me. The command line client allows accounts to have more than one address. The GUI client does not. The whole design so far looks like a quick and dirty job. I think we can improve it.
-
I originally posted my idea in the forum below.
http://forum.feathercoin.com/index.php?topic=512.0Essentially, an url donation link that can be automatically opened in ftc wallet. Think of something like clicking on a magnet url opens up a bittorrent client. Click on an FTC url opens up ftc wallet to send(donate) to someone.
-
you just need to have the software listen for the request. but browsers just open links. the software needs to do convert the link to a request.
nah, it does. I used the gui to create many addresses. -
The wallet has multiple accounts, with multiple addresses each. The GUI doesn’t show this.

Maybe you should focus more on mining profitablity than design of wallet. I just bought 200FT on e-bay for 30USD so for me it have no meaning to mine them…I am mining litecoins instead. You should consider this: without miners your fancy currency will die!! And I definitely do not want FTC to die :'(
Yes, we’re going to invade Scotland and force them to pay more for our coins.
The value of the coins comes from people using them. If the wallet doesn’t have features that make people’s usage more productive then they won’t use the coins even if it more profitable. This is why all the coins crashed. Everybody seems to want easy money without the work.
The coin isn’t dying. It was necessary to wait to make sure enough people changed over.
Also:
Without coins, there’s no users.
Without users, there’s no value.
Without value, there’s no pools.
Without pools, there’s no coins. That’s how it works.
-
actually there is no reasonable usage of any cryptocoins yet…thats why 90% of people involved in coins just do it (mine or buy them) for speculative puropses. Thats how it works from my point of view :(

Please stay on topic everyone. There are plenty of profitability posts scattered throughout the forum.
You don’t need a website to use coins. You just need to use them. It’s a question of just doing it. We’re all just used to the “modern conveniences” that we think the grocery store is more important than the vendor and buyer.
Well, could we have a laboratory forum to throw code samples and discuss future of crypto. Feathercoin is just the brand name for this community’as potential. The success of the coin will not come from the magical wizardry of the invisible hand of the passive market. It’s going to come from our reputation as a respensive and innovative community.
Firefox exists not just because it’s a good browser, but because Mozilla has the innovators who also created Popcorn, Jetpack, Drumbeat.
