Burr its cold in here, light em up! -2016 Gpu miner build log
-
I will have some pictures later today, made some progress, then back tracked a bit.
I have 5 of these expensive server chassis in total and they each can fit 6 GPUs… while that was cool back in the day, maintaining 6 GPUs in a tight space is pretty f***ing annoying. On top of that, when I booted into windows, I found that my 6x GPU mods were not working and I was capped at the good ole 4x GPUs in windows.
So my new plan is to go from 2x PSU and 6x GPUs to 1x PSU and 4x GPUs per box. This will let windows run the GPUs without needing to be modded… I may swap to Linux when I have time.
Here is my pile of parts:
3x EVGA 1300g2 psu
2x Seasonic x1250 psu
1x Coolermaster 1000w bronze psu
1x Lepa 850w bronze psu
14x 7970/r9 280x mixed
5x 7950 Sapphire
2x r9 290
5x Grey Matter Industries 6x GPU Server Chassis (loaded)
3x Asrock h81 pro btc w/ pentiums
1x MSI AM3+ Military class 3, no processor -
I have my first miners up and running at home again, 4x r9 280x @ 395kh each, 2x r9 290s @ 430-460kh, and a 7950 @ 280kh
worksize 256 seems to work well for 7950s

@RIPPEDDRAGON PM me your email, I’ll give you a hash rate bonus ;)
-
Its like the half finished death star in here, doing some serious damage to blocks and should be at 5.3-5.5 MH/s by the end of tonight. If I dont sleep… i can hit 7.5 MH/s

Awesome! And here I thought Id be pulling some nice hash with my 7950’s but I’ll be lucky to be getting 2.1MH/s with those.
Toss up some pics once finished.
PS, who needs sleep?!?!

Ill grab my cable and post some here in a few mins, just got drivers and miner working on another rig, now time to install the rest of the GPUs
-
Ahh how nice, here we begin! I wish it were that easy…
Well lets make use of this weather!
Time to dismantle, 2 out of 3 SSDs booted into windows
GPUs FOR DAYZ
This is what the insides look like without GPUs for those who wonder
UGHH, Let me remind you how beautiful these were before I tore them all apart. 5 and 6 GPUs are too might to maintain in one box, this is a fast and easy solution seeing that I sold off 1/3 of my processing power in 2014/15
-
Have 2 rigs running, the guts of a 3rd stripped and ready for a rebuild. Need to find my windows usb in my piles of usb keys…
-
Looks like one is having stability issues, will have to look into it later

Hi, Why not develop FPGA ?

If I had more time in my life or if I didn’t write software for a living I probably would. I find it hard to come home and work on code or even sit in front of a computer when I have been in front of them all day. I do enjoy getting my hands dirty to play with hardware as its a change of pace.
-
My basement is now warmer than the rest of my house, the foundation has been warming up over the last week and now no longer feels cold.
-
using a mining farm to heat the basement is the most sophisticated heating solution I’ve seen so far :D
-
3rd winter with some of these space heaters (gpus)
My original msi 7970 from June 2013 is still mining today!
-
Muhahah, I have reached equilibrium in the house finally, just needed the slab to warm up enough…
Temps in the house are @ 70f and are set @ 64f…maybe I can stop our oil usage or put a dent in it this year
-
Might be a short mining season, temps are headed back up with no sign of going back down… what a sad winter.
Once I need to start cooling my house I will scale back mining till the fall.
For those that are curious I am successfully heating 1800 sqft of house with my server farm. I can set the temp at 60f and the upstairs house will be 65 at night and into the 70s during the day. My basement where the servers sit goes as low as 70 during the night and upwards of 85f during the day.

You seem to use an USB connection from the motherboard to the GPU.
I’ve never seen that.
How does that work and what parts are needed to build that setup? -

How does that work and what parts are needed to build that setup? It isn’t USB. It’s PCIe x1 over a cable which looks like USB.
Something like ASRock BTC Pro Kit, but more advanced.

you can find them on ebay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/PCI-E-1x-to-16x-0-6M-USB-3-0-Powered-Extender-Riser-Card-Adapter-w-Molex-Bitcoin-/281279202978?hash=item417d8c06a2:g:p6EAAOxyGwNTFnY9
