In this episode the BBT dives into the Sapphire Toxic R9 280x Toxic and its performance hashing, both from a open air aluminum, traditional case both open and closed and finally with some external airflow provided from a fan. Additionally which settings worked best for us for a strong and solid performance. We build a crazy fast traditional PC to push these cards to the limits both from a mining rig and gaming perspective, figuring with just two why not build an great PC in the process.
Best configuration we found was (Crossfire Disabled):
-I 13 -w 256 -g 2 --shaders 2048 --thread-concurrency 8192 --gpu-engine 1070 --gpu-memclock 1500 --gpu-powertune 20 --gpu-vddc 1.100
As for the PC build the specs are:
Carbide Series® Air 540 High Airflow ATX Cube Case
Intel i7 4770k @ 4.6ghz (stable)
MSI Z87-G45 Gaming LGA 1150 Motherboard
16gb (8x2) Corsair Ballistix Memory
2x 240GB Kingston HyperX SSD - set to Raid0
eVGA Supernova 1300W G2 Power SupplyLet us know what you think! As for our next few episodes are going to cover 2 topics I believe a lot will be interested in:
- Deep dive on the pseudoscience behind finding the right set of configurations
- Explain through visual animation (building as we speak in After Effects) what is double spending, how if 0 confirmations it can occur and 7+ confirmation’s via peer to peer solve the issue

Nice video, cheers for sharing, I have the same card. But haven’t been able to get it above 600-650kh, in BAMT, I think it’s because I’m using it with 2x 7950 which uses 1 thread rather than two. I’ve also not been able to shift down the voltage from 1.256V. Are you sure it’s running at the lower voltage?
This could be a really dumb long shot, but have you tried tying each 280x to its own worker in your pool?

I finally manged to under volt my 7950’s via BIOS, I’m planning on doing the same to my 280x toxic later today using this post: http://rumorscity.com/2014/01/03/litecoin-mining-sapphire-radeon-r9-280x-sweet-spot-for-740khashsec/
Getting the two threads working right on the 280x will be my second task. I’ve not thought about using a different pool worker. I feel I might need to run another instance of cgminer. Some how disable one card in one instance, and then in the second instance disable the other two cards, to run them separate?
I was using linux BAMP, but recently swapped to SMOS, essentially a modded BAMT.

Awesome video, subbed on YouTube.

With some great community feedback we have used a suggestion sent in to us for these toxic’s
-I 13 -w 256 -g 2 --shaders 2048 --thread-concurrency 8192 --gpu-engine 1160 --gpu-memclock 1875 --gpu-powertune 20 --gpu-vddc 1.250
We have now been able to maintain 806k/hash per card! just over 1.6m/hash for the two!
Epic!
Thanks again for supporting ftc!
I’ll be watching. Love the channel and intro track btw.

I just put mine at 1080 clock, and it churns ~740khs, no other mods required. Intensity 13, 2 threads.
But at what cost?
I’m hitting a steady 740 per card and pulling 650W at the wall. or 2.28Kh/W
I changed the settings to the above and got a steady 803 per card pulling 780W at the wall. or 2.06Kh/W
I think the above says it all of your paying your own electric bill!
Our rig is holding 714w @ 803/h+ using a eVGA 1300w G2 PSU ; good to hear however that setting yields another 800+ k/h
