Trouble with 4+ GPUs in win 7
-
So if you have seen any of my threads I have 5x GreyMatter Industries 6 GPU per server boxes…
In win 7 its a royal PITA to get more than 4 GPUs running together so I scrapped that for now. Plus I only have 20 GPUS now compared to the 30 I used to run.
Now I cant even get my rigs to run 4 GPUs in the same box, 2/3 of my rigs will black screen and reboot and only show 3/4 of the GPUs, I have tried swapping good graphics cards from other machines and it does not change it, I know all of my cards work because mining with any 3 of them after removing 1 works fine.
The missing GPUs dont even show up in the devices list, its like they are not plugged in and the fans dont even spin up.
I am just tired of having to pull and reorder 4 burning hot GPUs
I can pull all 4, reorder them and and reboot and 4 will get detected and run until it randomly black screens, it could black screen in seconds or it has also ran for 3 days before doing it. -
Linux is better. Set up and forget. The only issue is when a GPU becomes SICK or DEAD, you have to restart the whole rig because there is no such thing as driver recovery.

Same issues here. My rig ran fine for days/weeks on end and one day it was powered off when I came home. Now ive been fighting it for a week to try and get things working again. It works fine with one GPU (still not hashing as fast as it should, but working). I ran this same system with Win7 mining litecoin for probably close to a year or more and had very few issues. Im not sure whats changed.
I might make the switch to Linux and see what changes there.Maybe a bit off topic but what is it about mining that causes these systems to be so flaky? Drivers crashing, GPUs not detected, etc. Isnt this just like gaming for extended periods of time? Or 3D rendering a huge render? We are asking the GPU to perform a calculation and return a result… why is that so tough?

Consumer level hardware isn’t supposed to run 24/7 under heavy load for years. Especially power supplies.

I found all the windows builds and bins flaky, they crashed every ~ 4 days. I finally switched to sgminer compiled on 14.04. I don’t get 100kHash/sec only 75 kHash/s but haven’t crashed since.
I’ve been waiting for it to crash to force me to try @Ghostlanders new NGminer!

I have had good success once I get a rig stable, however, getting a window rig stable is a bitch. Right now I am only having issues with one of the rigs and the rest run 24/7 no problems in windows. I managed to stabilize one of them by putting a 7950 rather than a 7970/280x as the 4th card.

Maybe power is the issue? I think that was part of my issue. I used to have 4 7950’s per rig powered by a 1200w PSU mining scrypt but I had flashed a different firmware that ran at 1.09v rather than 1.25v - this dropped me to about 200watts per card. I used a usb drive as the boot device and ran it on 240v. This must have been right on the edge of what the PSUs could handle because now, on stock voltage and using a hard drive rather than usb drives and the systems are not stable. With 3 video cards Im ok, but not 4.

I am planning on swapping power supplies or adding a 2nd to this rig as they all support 2 PSUs. Its either a bad power supply or a bad motherboard.
All of my other rigs are built exactly the same without issues.

Whats the most stable linux build for mining? Debating moving back to it as I used to run 6x GPUs on prebuilt BAMT/PiMP back in the day with nearly no issues.

True, true, true… Pulled the EVGA 1300g2 this past saturday, it had a burnt pin on one of the GPU connectors where it connects to the power supply. I swapped it out with my spare 1300g2 and no problems at all.
4 Rigs and 13 GPUs stable for 3 days currently.
With your 0.9.2 update…i got another 60KH/s per r9 290 and now my main rig wont mine for more than 6 hours… just bumped up the voltages and we will see if I can get the farm 100% stable here in the next few days.

Interesting journey you have
You must have a lot of fun.

I still need to try the 0.9.2 update, maybe it will help my 7950’s run a bit better. Ive just been busy and havent had time to mess with them.

Playing with PC equipment is definitely fun for me even if its breaking. Its appears that I might have gotten the whole farm stable. FINALLY!!!
I used to have 5 of these in the top half of a server rack and there was almost always 1 rig causing issues… it was probably this one with the burnt power supply connection.
-
Fuck… stable for a week on the farm then 10 resets yesterday after taking them down this weekend they have been so unstable.

I always hated/loved how flaky this stuff is. Once Id get them setup I didnt want to touch them again - even so much as connecting a monitor or remoting in just to check on them.
“If it aint broke, dontfixtouch it!”
