If that was the case then why did the world switch to one that for the most part doesn’t change? Why not just use gold as a means of currency? For the average person, Bitcoins are FAR too complicated. Even though we may not think it is, the average person doesn’t want to deal with it.
Um… they didn’t. They switched AWAY from the “gold standard”. Read up about “Nixon Shock”.
Of course the average person doesn’t want to deal with it. You know what else people don’t want to deal with? IP addresses, DHCP leases, frame relaying, ping timeouts, corrupted streams, html tags, cookies, and about 10,000 other technical details that make the web function. Yet, somehow, technology advanced so rapidly that these things became an inseparable part of our every day lives, and people barely even know these things exist. They just push the button, and read their mail. And soon, people will push the button, and pay for things with Bitcoin.

When I said that they switched I meant from trading commodity goods to a fiat currency. For the most part that doesn’t change. The inflation is there, however it isn’t significant as it is with Bitcoin going from $120 to >$1000 back to $800 in a matter of weeks.

I agree with you, but then I think of confirmation delays and wonder when that will be. I always wheel out my tired old example (don’t yawn) of walking into an airport, walking up to the airline desk, buying a ticket and getting on the next flight. Even consider going to the local supermarket, paying at the POS, and walking out with your shopping. That’s consumer grade. How far away is that?

Have ever you paid with bitcoin? Transaction is instant. You need the confirmation in a normal everyday situation about as much as you need to show your id every time you buy milk.
America. Los Angeles, specifically. Every time I use my credit card, they want to see my ID. Then, later, Visa charges me interest, and my bank charges me a fee for holding onto my cash for me, charges me a fee for the pieces of paper I’ll later use to pay Visa with, and charges me a fee when I use too many of those piece of paper… because I didn’t have enough money. They charge me money because I don’t have enough money.
And are you ready for the properly insane bit? The transaction can be reversed up to 90 days later! 90 DAYS! You think 10 minutes is long to wait for a confirmation? Try waiting 90 days!

If this is true, then I stand corrected! I have never paid for anything with any cc. I am basing this on moving my coins around and waiting sometimes 48 hours for transactions to complete. What have you bought with bitcoin?
I think the Humble Indie Bundle was the first thing I paid for with Bitcoins, but it certainly hasn’t been the last. Gyft.com got a bunch of my bitcoins durring the recent return to 600 over the weekend. That was incredibly easy.

I too have no experience with credit cards so you may very well be right. The only problem I still see with the wide acceptance of cryptos is that it seems complicated. That alone will prevent a lot of people who don’t see any gain in switching to cryptos from doing it. By educating the public on how they are used, what the benefits of them are, and how much easier they are to use in the long run, we can assure that the long-term usage will be accepted.
